Hello, I'm assisting a friend who has been using a system with 16GB RAM across two sticks in A2 B1 slots (single channel). Over time, the computer would fail to boot when adding more than two sticks, regardless of whether it was dual or single channel. We recently upgraded to a new motherboard, which initially worked well with dual channel on A2 B2 slots. However, enabling XMP 3200 caused the system to refuse booting, so we disabled it and it started at 2100MHz, allowing both sticks to function properly in dual channel. After about an hour, the PC would shut off and stop supporting dual channel, even with BIOS settings adjusted. Currently, the machine only runs smoothly with two or three sticks in single channel. Our findings suggest the old motherboard was designed for single-channel use, and dual channel support was disabled by default. The new board now supports dual channel but warns a red light when attempting it. It still functions correctly with multiple sticks in single channel as long as dual channel isn't activated. We've tried reseating RAM, coolers, cables, updated BIOS, changed the PSU, and even swapped RAM sticks. Still, we're unsure what might be causing this issue—could it be a faulty CPU, power supply, or something else?

The term "turning on" dual channel is misleading. It actually refers to having a stick in each channel, not enabling or disabling it. Dual channel works by using two separate channels (A2 and B2), but switching between single and dual mode can cause confusion if you're mixing up concepts with other gear settings.

You're using three sticks, but the RAM is only running in single-channel mode. The exceptions are when you use combinations like A1+B1 or A2+B2, which don't work. I apologize for the typo—you meant A2+B1. Your motherboard didn't support dual-channel with three sticks before, and now it won't run in any other mode except single stick. The new motherboard worked with A2+B2 in dual-channel, but then it shut down unexpectedly. Now it only accepts single sticks or combinations like A2+B1+B2, which are still single-channel. Two sticks won't boot either.

This may cause problems and isn't usually advised. A2 combined with B1 remains dual channel, though most boards need at least two channels before adding a third, making that setup likely problematic.

Thank you for your explanation. Even though A2+B1 functioned previously, the new board won’t support dual channel setups at this time. We’re currently using three sticks—A2, B1, B2—so based on your details, it seems we’re running a dual channel of A2 and B2 with a single channel for B1. The issue is that any stick configuration other than matching channels (like A1+A2 or B1+B2) won’t work. The motherboard can’t send the signal to the monitor, and you’ll see the red DRAM light.
