RAM setup for a modified Minecraft server
I'm planning to assemble my own PC soon. It will be used for light to medium gaming and a large Minecraft server. The server will host 4 to 8 players with 34 to 35 mods installed. I currently have a Corsair Vengeance LPX stick with 16GB and 3200Mhz RAM, but that's the limit. I realize it's sufficient for Windows, yet it restricts server RAM to about 12GB, which I don't think is ideal. Would I require additional RAM beyond that?
Are you running a Ryzen processor for the server? If yes, dual-channel RAM is essential. Otherwise, 16GB should suffice and you can always upgrade later if needed. The 34-35 mods don’t seem excessive. I’ve managed to run games like Direwolf Ultimate with around 3000 mods on an aging Athlon 5150, using just 8GB dedicated to the server for five players. It worked fine overall, though I didn’t like the lag when everyone explored. The main problem was the slow CPU performance. :p
You're on the right track! With an AMD Ryzen 5 2600 and an ASRock B450M Pro4 AM4 Micro-ATX motherboard, you're all set for a solid build.
