Hello everyone, I'm hoping you can offer some guidance or confirm if it's time for a RAM upgrade since I've exhausted all options. I recently switched from Intel to AMD (3900x, B450 Tomahawk Max) and kept the existing RAM from my previous setup (Kingston HyperX Prepredator RGB 2x8GB). On my old system, I couldn't overclock the RAM because it was an older mini ATX unit that didn’t support higher speeds. Now I’m preparing for this new build. The XMP profiles don’t seem to help—they just display without making any changes. Even when I manually adjust the frequency and timings using DRAM Calc, it still doesn’t work. If I set the frequency above the default or change timings, it fails. I’ve updated my CPU and chipset, BIOS, cleared CMOS, and even tried Ryzen Master, but nothing seems to stick. I can tweak BIOS settings freely, yet manually changing the frequency always results in failure. I’m stuck after trying everything. The advertised speeds of the kit are mentioned. If they match 2400, XMP won't take effect. Manual overclocking to around 2933 or a general manual overclock depends on IC quality. For kits rated at 3200, updating the BIOS is recommended—set the SOC to 1.1 Dram to 1.35 and try 3200. Ensure the slots have dual-channel enabled. If you choose to overclock manually (targeting 2400 or higher), set the SOC to 1.1 Dram to 1.35 and attempt 2666. Use memtest86 and OCCT to confirm stability.
Also verify RAM placement in the slots farthest from the CPU. Bad diagram here... CPU socket ---- DIMM A1---- DIMM A2 ---- DIMM B1 ---- DIMM B2 Place modules in A2 and B2. You’ll also need to follow these steps... Obtain correct TRFC values via Ryzen Master, match them with the DRAM calculator. If TRFC is incorrect, opt for the higher value. Adjust other timings from the DRAM timing tool. Set SOC voltage around 1.05V. The calculator suggests TRFC around 100 units lower than required (e.g., 470 vs needed 560). Booting won’t happen if TRFC is too tight with these modules. I’m using budget Hynx MFR chips.
Working remotely has made it hard to restart the system right now, but I’ve updated my to-do list. Everything’s set in the correct slots. For the TRFC, my bios show 1/2/4; I’ve experimented with different settings, but I’m leaning toward switching TRFC 1 and keeping 2/4 on auto. Thanks!
Not designed for the 3000 series. Capable of holding up to 3400 at 1.0v. The highest safe SOC level is around 1.15v, which usually suffices for about 3700.
