Typically, most OC boards enable processors, usually not original equipment manufacturer models. The X4 840 doesn't unlock cores but adds 2mb of cache. CPU part numbers that end in AC will work, while Thuban X4 models ending in CB can reach 6 cores.

Search for affordable Am2+ or Am3+ motherboards. They seem to be quite inexpensive. DDR3 RAM might also be budget-friendly. You could consider upgrading the board and RAM later to experiment with it.
