Recently, a friend inquired if I could lend them an old computer. I chose to upgrade one of the outdated towers my father still kept in his company basement, giving it more RAM and a decent CPU. The motherboard supports DDR3 RAM, but the manual mentions an AM3 socket, which aligns with expectations. While installing the cooler, I noticed the socket labeled as AM2. To my understanding, no AM2 boards were designed to accommodate DDR3 memory. Have you encountered anything like this before? Are there any noticeable differences in the layout between AM2 and AM3? I checked the part number for your CPU and found it to be an AM3 processor. The socket seems incorrectly labeled—it might actually be an AM2+ or AM3 socket.
There are definitely hybrid boards available, but this one only supports DDR3 RAM. The socket is labeled AM2, even though AM2+ sockets were also marked as AM2, which caught my attention.
Keep in mind too that this is an OEM motherboard, not a consumer board. There's a good chance they just picked the cheapest compatible part (the AM2+ socket) even though they were putting in an AM3 CPU and only DDR3 RAM. That wouldn't be a good idea for a consumer board (somebody would call and complain about their AM2+ CPU not working with the DDR3 RAM), but is just fine for an OEM board.
