Hi, four years ago I assembled a PC for a relative with limited funds. I had to cut back on some choices. Important components included an ASRock H100M-DGS i5-6400 DDR4 GeIL stick (1x8 GB, 2400MHz) and a CL16 GP48GB2400C16SC motherboard. Now he wants me to recommend a RAM upgrade, but I’m unsure what to do. The Intel site says the CPU supports up to DDR4-2133, while the motherboard’s specs only list DDR4-2133 sticks. It seems the board hasn’t been updated much. My thoughts are on 2x8GB modules first, then considering higher speeds. Is it worth it? Will it still boot? I don’t have many reliable references, so I really need your advice.

Faster speeds are preferable. You can now find two DDR4 RAM sticks at a reasonably low price.

It's an H110 board. The 2133 figure is the base CPU speed; anything above that is technically an overclock and isn't guaranteed. However, because it uses an H110 board, it only supports up to 2133. Even with a faster setup, it will run at 2133 and boot. Additionally, this board has only two dimms, so you're likely replacing the existing unit—especially since you're getting a 2x8 gig kit.

Absolutely, that was my original idea, but I realized later that higher frequency options might not work. Still, I could potentially secure a 2x8GB kit with improved timing.

As I mentioned, you can obtain higher speed RAM, but it will only support speeds up to 2133 MHz. You might consider purchasing additional RAM modules (though combining them isn't always reliable), or opt for a complete package at a lower price if that's what you're looking for.
