I owned many CPUs over the years, working closely with XMP settings. I had an i5 6600k and an i7 6700 build. XMP failed to boot at 2800 for both. A 8600K build for a friend worked at 3200, but 3200 didn’t boot on another. An 8700K ran fine at 2800 without any adjustments. I also had two 9700K machines—one booted at 2800 while the other didn’t. The 12400 and 21360KF models all started up at 3200. It seems these builds were quite typical. I stopped purchasing high-speed memory because I realized I didn’t have time to tweak them manually.
I verify everything using cpu-z and Task Manager. Recently I updated my BIOS, so I need to ensure there are no newer versions available.
I'm using 2x16GB DDR4 3600 MHz with C18 speeds on a 2700X in a X470 board. Running at 3600 is tough without raising the SOC voltage too much and lowering timings, which feels unnecessary. I'm currently running 1.12 SOC voltage as per software and slightly increasing the RAM voltage to about 1.36-1.38 volts to keep stability at that speed with this memory setup. Performance will differ from board to board, RAM to RAM, but adjusting SOC and RAM voltages helps reach more consistent speeds. You likely won't hit 3600, but you should see improvement over 3200 under these conditions.
it's not the RAM voltage itself, but the controller voltage that determines how quickly the memory operates. On AMD boards, the name changes, so refer to the manual. When this happens repeatedly, it usually means the system couldn't start with that configuration and falls back to the previous working setting.
Achieving 3600 on a 2000 series chip requires a significant effort that could result in reduced performance compared to a lower frequency design with improved timing or latency. For a Zen 2 processor, reaching 3600 would be feasible with minor adjustments.
Restart CMOS and attempt once more. Keep all configurations unchanged after resetting.
I handled Ryzen using Master and the DRAM calculator, raising it to 2800. I'm aiming for 3200 with optimal timings, but I think 3600 might be too risky at the near-safe voltage range. I'll focus on tweaking the BIOS for top performance and stability, keeping the voltage low.
even here on this site some folks claim you can just change the speed to whatever you like and it should work. but that rarely holds true in practice. many motherboards offer "test it" features, which only help if you're confident about the settings. when a system boots but keeps failing—like when RAM isn’t recognized—confusion often arises. additionally, older Ryzen models frequently struggle to support XMP speeds above around 3000mhz.
