I've never come across 2nd gen CPUs being deliberately restricted to just two dimensions. It seems the memory controller might be faulty. How probable is it to try with a friend's DDR3? If someone has a 2x8GB stick or even a single 8GB one, you might find some solutions.
I should have purchased an 8GB RAM if I realized it wouldn’t fit. I also switched from an Athlon X4 760K to this model solely for the extra 4 slots, but I still have the 8GB installed.
