Which game is the most popular? I own Dirt and Grid 2; project cars seems solid. Anyone else have favorites?

Forza Horizon 3 works well too, and BeamNG.Drive shines with its incredibly realistic crash physics in driving games.

I won't rely on a wheel for these games, using an Xbox game pad instead if it makes sense

The Crew possibly? It was available on Uplay about a month or two ago. The graphics aren't the best from my perspective.

Grid and dirt titles work well with a controller. Also worth mentioning: Burnout Paradise, Need for Speed 2015 (handling isn’t great), other NFS games, flatout titles (especially on GOG), Ridge Racer, and Forza Horizon 3 – one of the top arcade racers lately. Performance is uncertain but has improved since launch. Flatout games are a must-buy. Ridge Racer is still unbounded – I haven’t played it yet. Forza Horizon 3 seems like a standout arcade racer after its release, though its performance remains shaky. Fuel is an underrated gem. Mad Max isn’t strictly racing but offers fun driving and racing with solid optimization. Test Drive Unlimited can be tricky on controllers, but it’s doable. Project Cars blends simulation and arcade elements – a good mix. Assetto Corsa is the sim version. RFactor 1 has tons of mods, while RFactor 2 has fewer but still active communities. Automobilista is based on RFactor but offers a completely different experience. Simbin games cover a wide range from racing titles to GT legends, with plenty of mod support and settings. There are also games that defy controller play – Dirt Rally, iRacing (subscription, online), Richard Burns Rally (dated but excellent sim), GP Legends (classic F1 simulation), and more.
