R9 290 black screen oc
R9 290 black screen oc
I am adjusting the settings to overclock my r9 290 vapor x 4gb, following the usual steps. I ran heaven and experimented with voltages and clocks, achieving +13mv, +0% PL, 1080core, and 1500memory. I set up the fan curve. When I pushed it further, artifacts appeared, so I left it as it is. Turning off heaven causes the screen to go black suddenly, even when I don’t run heaven. When I run heaven normally, everything works without artifacts, and temperature stays below 80°C. I’m unsure why it crashes during idle despite being fine under load. Anyone have experience with this issue?
Turn on the force constant core voltage setting and observe the results. The problem with overclocking the 290/290x occurs because the core voltage supplies the memory controller. When the voltage is lowered during idle, it drops below 1v, making the memory controller unstable. This results in a black screen. The challenge is maintaining stable memory performance during idle while handling heavy loads.

So when I looked at the settings in MSI Afterburner, I already had the force core voltage checked. I noticed that if I unchecked it, the voltage didn’t change. When I run Heaven, the voltage is around 1120mV to 1180mV, but when I close it, it drops to 1008mV. Is this how the force voltage is supposed to work, or is there something wrong with it?
when i have stock clocks at 1030core and 1400mem with a core voltage of +19mv, it doesn’t crash during idle but fails at 1500mem oc. However, it handles full load without issues. I can adjust the overclock in afterburner to raise the aux voltage, but the memory voltage is fixed and remains at 1150 even when I try to change it. It’s not working because pushing the slider to its maximum still keeps the voltage at 1080mv and causes a crash.
The force constant voltage is intended to maintain the specified value. There is no voltage slider for memory voltage. You can disable ULPs and PowerPlay. Remember, the card should not be downclocked.
