Hey everyone, I’ve been reflecting on upgrading from my old setup with a 4-core CPU. I’m considering switching to an AMD CPU for light gaming and productivity, but I’m not a streamer or video editor. I want to know how much improvement a 4-core processor would bring compared to an 8-core one, or if I’d need even more cores for long-term use like my current rig. Please share your thoughts!

It relies on various elements.
If your GPU matches the time of your CPU, you'll notice minimal (or none) variation in games.
If you haven't focused on productivity yet, you won't see any differences there.

More cores allow handling multiple tasks simultaneously, enabling greater productivity at once, though they don't always improve simple operations. IPC and frequency play a key role here. Modern operating systems such as Windows 10/11 can also distribute the workload across CPU cores, ensuring all threads are utilized effectively and boosting overall performance with more cores. There are very few 4-core CPUs available today; only Intel produces a few, mostly models from 6 cores up.

Even with a high-end processor, older CPUs will still offer significant improvements if they're from a recent generation. However, keep in mind that low-core CPUs (4 or 6) typically represent entry-level models, where single-core performance doesn't reach its peak. For instance, a Ryzen 9950X handles single-core tasks more efficiently than a Ryzen 9600X because each of its cores operates faster. This is why many users opt for top-tier processors despite not requiring an excessive number of cores.

Certain contemporary processors feature hyperthreading, allowing a single core to handle additional tasks through extra circuits that manage a secondary thread.

Looking ahead ten years is difficult to predict.
Choose a processor within your budget that fits your financial limits.
Focus on the performance of a single thread, as this determines desktop responsiveness and is typically most critical for gaming.

In my opinion, current tasks mostly demand a 6C CPU at the very least. A solid 8C should handle the workloads you mentioned well. I don’t think the “10 year” trend will last long considering the rapid improvements in CPU speed, graphics cards, and the increasing complexity of apps, games, and AI. The market has slowed down for years because of limited competition, and Intel kept releasing updates while AMD was lagging. When AM4 arrived, I believe it truly transformed consumer PC performance, core counts, and pricing.
