The operating system that came with OEM systems usually aligned with the available RAM capacity. It’s probable they included Vista 64 or 7 64 MB.
I owned an LGA1366 board with 3x4GB DDR3 1600 and Windows 7 64 bit back then. 2GB DDR3 modules were definitely more typical. In a triple-channel setup, that would still amount to 6GB. Also worth mentioning, DDR3 1600 was considered risky at launch—likely the voltage (around 1.65) damaged my motherboard after several years.
Now the previous setup: an Athlon X2 with 2GB DDR2, which was later upgraded to 6GBv(2x1 + 2x2), and again Windows 7, though I still kept Windows XP for compatibility reasons.

I was surprised to find I was the last person still using his HP Pavilion e9280t Desktop. I planned to remove the hard drive and store it in a case, but gave it a fresh start with 6GB RAM up to 20GB total. It's working well now... but it's unclear how long this will last. Appreciate the advice on placing and installing the RAM.
