I'm attempting to configure a server PC with WoL activated. I'm using Ubuntu Server on a Ryzen 7 3700X running in a biostar X370GTN (latest BIOS) that supports WoL. In the BIOS I've set WoL and ErP as disabled, but whenever the system powers down or enters sleep mode, +5VSB disappears completely from the port, causing it to stop lighting up and WoL to fail. I've followed the correct setup in Ubuntu, yet nothing remains stable. What's happening? How can I resolve this issue?

PSU: Specify make, model, wattage, age, condition (original to build, new, refurbished, used)?
Power down, unplug, open the case.
Search for loose connectors.
Do you have a multimeter and understand how to use it? Or do you know someone who does?

I attempted to install it outside the case before placing it inside, so it doesn't appear in the case at all—though I'm not sure why that matters. The PSU is a used Corsair CX550M, appearing to be in good shape and functioning properly; the PC runs smoothly with everything connected. I verified its output voltage using a multimeter, and all readings, including the 5VSB pin, match expectations. The only cables present are the motherboard, CPU, and GPU, all securely plugged in.

This was once a straightforward setup before Microsoft made adjustments and altered related configurations, especially concerning WOL. Even then, the BIOS needed modifications to support these proprietary methods of activating machines.

It seems there must be a specific BIOS setting enabling this functionality. WoL might function even when activated, but it tends to be unreliable. We often had to repeatedly send the WoL command through test servers to achieve success.

A more reliable approach involved using the rack-mounted power controller to restart the machines and then leveraging the BIOS power restore option. The exact terminology differs, but most BIOS versions support booting when power is restored.

Fortunately, modern affordable power plugs exist that can be controlled remotely via a network. These also address the common concern about waking a machine from outside the house using standard WoL methods.
