Question Windows 11 or Windows 11 Pro or Linux
Question Windows 11 or Windows 11 Pro or Linux
I'm having trouble deciding between Linux and Windows 11 64 bit home and Windows 11 64 bit Por. There are clear reasons for each, so it's hard to pick. If you need advice, let me know your thoughts.
For the general user, Windows 11 home seems suitable since Linux might cause compatibility problems and most users don't require Pro features. But if your computer is used for gaming or professional tasks, I recommend Windows 11 Pro because it supports more RAM options.
Running the system on a Threadripper workstation equipped with 192GB of DDR5 ECC RAM, 20TB of SATA storage, and two GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards.
Windows 11 Pro now allows more RAM compared to Windows 11 Home, which is limited to 128GB.
Or rather will be, since you haven't bought it yet? When discussing the operating system, it's useful to clarify your intended purpose for the computer. From your previous discussion, it seems you plan to use this for compiling game code with Unreal Engine 5. Are you thinking of running the game on Windows? If so, you'll likely find it most convenient to use a Windows machine. Nonetheless, considering the significant investment in a high-spec system for developing games with such a powerful engine, and not being able to determine the appropriate OS yourself...
I plan to use UE5 on this workstation, though I have it installed on another storage machine. The operating system isn't a major concern since I can transfer the file as an .exe. Also, I'm currently occupied and likely won't receive the workstation for at least a year due to the extensive setup required. Additionally, I need to know if Linux is a viable option given my 256GB of DDR5 ECC memory.
The Windows executable won't function on Linux. Most Windows programs don't work this way, except for very basic ones. You can't simply transfer the file to another system and operating system. There are numerous additional requirements involved. It seems you'll need Windows 11 Pro and a complete Unreal software installation.
Does it support Linux? Yes, you can use the source code and run Visual Studio on Linux. You can simply copy the uncompiled C++ source and install it without wasting your RAM.
