Question Stream by connecting a Desktop Gaming PC with a Laptop?
Hello everyone, hope everything is alright. I own a desktop gaming PC from a few years ago and a laptop of similar age. Although the laptop isn’t as powerful because it has its own graphics card, the processor and memory are almost identical. It’s a nice 17-inch HP laptop that was given to me, and it would be great to use it. Sharing my gaming stream would be helpful, especially for saving my content, with live broadcasting being a convenient option.
I’ve never streamed before, but I used to work in IT and build PCs or set up networks. I’m trying to figure this out and would appreciate your help.
I’d like to do some Twitch streaming. I’m considering two options:
- Connect my desktop to the laptop(s) so the desktop runs the game while the laptop handles the stream.
- Let the desktop manage everything (game and stream), and use the laptop’s built-in webcam to record me while I play, showing it in a corner of the screen while the rest is occupied by the game.
I’ve read that there are several methods to link two computers via HD cable, but I think this isn’t possible with just a regular cable. It might need something like an Elgato HD60, which could be expensive for me. I’ve also heard about using Ethernet cables and more complex setups, such as router port forwarding and third-party firmware, to turn routers into access points or wireless bridges. If this sounds feasible, I’d be open to exploring it.
Additionally, I’m curious if the streaming software or Twitch can accept streams from two sources at once into one broadcast. It would be nice for the laptop’s webcam feed to play alongside the game stream on the desktop, and ideally the laptop could handle both the game video and its own webcam, reducing the load on the desktop.
I’m not sure which approach works best or how to implement it, but I’ve done some basic research. If you can provide more detailed or advanced suggestions, that would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!
You're aware of the various options available for streaming? In short, there are two main approaches. The cheaper method lets you stream one system to another using NDI Tech, which sends a PC-to-PC connection over the network. Since you're comfortable with cabling and wiring, try to ensure a strong connection to avoid frame drops during streaming, as this approach uses significant bandwidth. The alternative is using a Capture Card or CC, which requires less bandwidth and is more user-friendly, though it costs more in terms of effort. I personally stream on dual PCs using a Capture Card for over five years. If you're interested in setting up a suitable streaming system, check out my Discord at JoshyyWinterz#1667. Also, keep in mind that your laptop's GPU can affect stream quality, and streaming from a laptop isn't recommended due to its limitations. I'm open to helping if you need further guidance—just let me know when you're ready.
