Question Strange power button problem that seems to be linked to the motherboard?
I've been facing this strange problem where my power button doesn't work and I have to restart the PC every time the power supply comes back on. I think the PSU isn't the issue, but everything seems fine otherwise. I'm pretty sure it's my motherboard, though I'm not entirely sure. I found an old forum thread that described my situation, but it didn't offer a real solution. Someone might have a better idea now.
Can you restart the system without using the front panel power button by connecting the +ve and -ve pins on the motherboard's front panel connector headers? If possible, then the problem lies with the case's power button.
Regarding cases, could you share the make and model of your case?
No, the jump trick isn't functioning properly—it matches the situation from the thread I shared earlier. The pins on the mobo for the power button are totally unresponsive. It's interesting that this started happening around the two-year mark too, even though we're both using Strix boards; my board is just a couple of generations newer. Maybe it's just pure luck.
When you shut down the computer, you need to first switch off and then turn on the PSU before pressing the case power button. If you wait too long after connecting the PSU, the power button may stop working and you’ll have to repeat the process. It might be a short circuit in the case that slowly charges a capacitor on the motherboard or something similar. You could attempt to remove all components from the case (bench testing) and try powering it on by shorting the power pins.
Shorting the power pins on the mobo doesn't produce any reaction. Gradually, the PSU switch becomes unresponsive and eventually stops working altogether. Now it's configured in BIOS to only boot when power is restored by flipping the switch back on, and I no longer interact with the power button.
I suggested testing the power pins with all components removed from the case. Take out the mobo and PSU, place them on a surface, reconnect everything, and attempt to short the pins. If successful, the issue probably lies in a connection between the case and the mobo.
Hi, this seems to match the issue you described earlier. I posted my problem before and just noticed this now. When I turn on the PC, only the RGB of the RAM appears, but when I shut off the power at the PSU and then turn it back on after about 10 seconds, it powers up without any issues.
