Question Strange CPU Overclocking Problems
Question Strange CPU Overclocking Problems
Attempting to boost the OC of my old i5 2500k to 4.5ghz. The BIOS settings are as follows:
Cpu voltage 1.350
Load line callibration Extreme (100%)
C states and Intel speed step are disabled.
Under stress, the PC performs well—tried running an AIDA64 CPU, FPU, cache, and memory under stress without any problems.
Left PC idle for 2 hours before returning, and it was completely frozen again.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Mobo Asus P8z77-M Pro
Temperatures remain stable, max around 72 degrees after 4 hours of AIDA64.
complete system specifications available; PSU make and model included.
i5 2500k processor
asus p8z77-M pro model
antec 380 watt 80 bronze unit
asus gtx 1060 with 3gb memory
seagate 500gb drive at 7200 rpm
8 gb ddr3 at 1333hz speed
Well it's not a great idea...
With 1.35V on a 2500K, you're likely to get around 150W (+/-), a 3GB 1060 might draw about 120W. These small amounts of power from RAM, SSDs, etc.
I'm thinking the PSU is an Earthwatts Green with 380W capacity? That could handle up to 336W on the 12V rail, which would be new.
This seems like an old PSU that might have worn out and can't meet the required 336W.
As discussed before, Extreme LLC isn't suitable for continuous use and probably won't help in this case.
Yeah, it's the green PSU. I just lowered the multiplier to 44 because I can't get stability at 45. Probably a degraded chip. The PC crashes when idle? (It shows a white uncorrectable error). I tried Prime95 for 4 hours without any crashes, but it crashes after about 2 hours when idle—that’s odd. Also, I plan to use the PC normally for games and browsing. If it ever has a sudden reboot or crash, I’ll buy a new PSU. Thanks for your help.
