Sequence of events:
The system operated smoothly for three months post-installation, with no problems. I added two fans and a second SSD M.2 drive (same model as before). It continued functioning properly. Later, after formatting the new SSD to D:, I put the system to sleep at night, just like before. In the morning it failed to wake up. Powering it down and restarting resolved the issue. Throughout the day it worked well. I thought it was a random crash, so I repeated the sleep cycle.
The next day it still wouldn’t wake up. No solution has helped—trying to power down, clearing CMOS, removing the new M.2 and fans, taking out the GPU, and re-securing cables didn’t help. The motherboard’s red CPU light remained lit.
I decided to test the CPU by ordering a different brand (MSI), a cheaper Ryzen 5 7600, and a new PSU and RAM. I installed everything on a bench without a case. The bench test confirmed everything was working. I then reinstalled the 7800X3D and the system failed to start—dead. I moved the new CPU to the main board and it finally booted, though Windows complained about the new CPU and required a PIN change.
Overall, the system is slower now and I’m concerned about damaging a $500 CPU chip. I’m unsure whether to sleep the system or just shut it down when idle. It’s puzzling why a stable system after three months would suddenly fail after adding an M.2 SSD and extra fans. I also wondered if swapping the motherboard with the new MSI would help.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I’ll consider using a more affordable CPU now. Performance with MS Flight Sim didn’t seem significantly affected—likely GPU-related.
I don’t understand why it happened, but I have some ideas about what to do. I would send back the 7800X3D to AMD for a replacement. Keep the components you like or used for troubleshooting. Return the parts you don’t want to hold on to. Wait for the new CPU from the AMD return process. Personally, I’d take everything you can from the diagnostic items except the CPU and wait for the return to be processed. Please try to return the 7600 by the last day of the return period if you can.
Following the setup of a new system a few months ago, I observed that sometimes after the pc entered sleep mode, I couldn't restore the screen without unplugging and reconnecting the hdmi cable. It might be unrelated, but could this have been the reason? I ended up turning off sleep mode and no longer use it, which has led to more problems.
Great ideas, thanks. I'll definitely go ahead with the RMA and consider making a new setup for a friend. (CPU connections are fine)
I also disabled sleep mode, which was disappointing since I preferred it. I believe the HDMI cable wouldn't have made a difference because the issue happened whether it was connected to the GPU or the motherboard graphics port (it was a DisplayPort cable).
During wake-up from sleep, with a wired keyboard any key would trigger the system, but with a Logitech wireless keyboard it didn't. A wireless Logitech mouse did wake it up. Plugging the keyboard into the MB USB didn't alter this behavior. I think it relies on the USB connection only for charging the keyboard's battery.
