Question Random crashes during gameplay?
Hi.
My self built pc has been having issues the past 6 months. Games crash on it with no error and nothing i could see in event viewer either. Games support tells me its not game issue so now im stuck.
I can play some games without issues, but in ex. Grounded/Astroneer/Days Gone etc the game runs for 10-60 minutes and then just shuts off. No error code. Just shuts the game off with no warning. Ive had some bluescreens but they are very rare.
I've had no issues encoding videos or running other software. Just when gaming, and its driving me absolutely nuts.
At this point in time ive tried:
Updated drivers, reinstalled drivers
Updated windows
Switched out SSHD for SSD
Switched from old (8 yo) 700w PSU to new corsair 850w PSU.
Updated BIOS
Checked cables.
Reinstalled windows
Heaven benchmark software - No issues over a short period of time atleast.
Im thinking its a hardware issue, mainly mobo or cpu but i could very well be wrong.
This computer is 2-6 years old now

I7-8700 3.2 GHz 6 core (6yo)
NZXT Kraken X53 (-1 yo)
MSI Z370-A PRO ATX LGA1151 (6yo)
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16gb DDR4-3200 CL16 (2 yo)
Corsair RM850e 850W (-1 yo)
MSI GeForce RTX 3070 GAMING Z TRIO (1 yo)
4 different SSD's/NVME. Min 2 months old, max 3 years old. Games are run on different ones.
2 Monitors
I run a USB hub, hardware sound mixer and a external mic if that information is needed. Everything has external power.
If someone could help me troubleshoot this issue out id be forever grateful.

Have you ever attempted to clear out your system of dust and debris?
It might seem weak, but this actually occurred to me before. Essentially the same peripherals worked slightly differently yet produced the same result. Crashes without errors or anything unusual and occasional BSODs. I tried almost everything known to man, except the extreme; just decided to push a 1300 Watt PSU inside for extra force. Still crashes... So, as long as it’s not something like Apex Legends where you’re playing and it’s stable, either fix the crashes or don’t play too much now.
The previous PSU might have been in poor condition, possibly harming parts like the GPU. It seems there could be a hardware problem. I’d likely begin by stress-testing the PC without the GPU and checking if someone would be interested in running it for a while.
I've completed stress testing the PC with the GPU, and also tested the GPU on another machine. All tests followed 3DMARK's 20 loop "20" minute stress test. With the GPU: no problems, performed four consecutive runs (1080p and 4K gaming). Without the GPU: no issues, two tests. In another computer: no issues, eight tests (1080p and 4K gaming). After these checks, I launched Days Gone, which crashed after 40 minutes. I restarted and tried Astroneer for 10 minutes before it crashed. Cyberpunk 2077 lasted about 1.5 hours before crashing. I'm really confused. 🤣
I've also ordered a new CPU, motherboard, cooling system, and RAM since those were already planned, hoping this resolves the issue. I plan to install them later tonight or this weekend.
After installing these new components I experienced no crashing problems but now have a new problem. The computer frequently stops completely during operation. I've tried updating the BIOS, verified the settings, inspected all cables on the motherboard and power supply unit, updated drivers, performed various 3DMark stress tests and checked the CPU for issues, yet nothing changed. The PC has mostly shut down except for one BSOD. Over the past few days I've had eight complete shutdowns (08.06 - 2 shutdowns, 10.06 - 2 shutdowns, 11.06 - 2 shutdowns with 1 BSOD, 12.06 - 2 shutdowns). The PSU was used in the previous build for six months without any issues.
