Question "Power Supply Idle Control"- Which choice applies?
I found this setting in my Asus B550-F motherboard BIOS named "Power Supply Idle Control" and there were three options: Low Current Idle, Typical Current Idle, and Auto. It was set to Auto, probably by default after a recent CMOS reset. Could anyone clarify what each option does and whether it’s necessary to adjust them? With the PSU I use being a Phanteks Revolt Pro 1000w, it seems reasonable to keep it in Auto mode?
Interesting point; I was wondering since "Auto" is typically the default, but I noticed some discussions about Typical Current Idle being the top choice and others suggesting Low is better for newer PSUs, which made me a bit confused. Also, I wanted to know if these settings affect things like GPU or CPU power usage when under load.
Thanks; I discovered a site that explains each choice clearly, though it only gives a brief overview of all three options, focusing mainly on the PSU’s power output.
Normal:
The usual choice is the default for most setups, making sure your power supply can handle regular voltage and power needs even when the system isn’t running.
Low:
Setting it to low reduces the voltage and power consumption while the system is idle, which helps cut down overall energy use.
Auto:
This mode lets the system adjust its idle power settings automatically based on current load and usage habits. It can improve efficiency depending on how you operate your computer.
You mentioned considering the "Auto" option, which seems reasonable, but I’m not sure if there’s a clear distinction between Auto and Normal unless the explanation is unclear.
Sorry for the confusion, it appears this setting isn’t well documented online.
The variation is likely due to the algorithm applied for each; it seems to hinge on the final line in the Auto description — "Depending on how you use your computer..." You probably won’t get much useful detail about the settings, as they’re likely irrelevant for most regular users.
It could affect the GPU while it's not running. It's suggested to stick with Typical settings.
