Question PC stutters and freezes while gaming on dual monitors
Hello,
I’m experiencing issues with my dual monitor setup when I switch to full screen. The PC freezes and the monitors flash rapidly. It’s strange since I don’t face this problem in windowed mode—any suggestions would be appreciated.
My system specs are:
AMD Ryzen 9 9950X
ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 Ti
Kingston FURY Beast RGB White 64GB
I mainly play simple games like CS2, Dota2, etc.
PSU details: make, model, wattage, age, condition (original to build, new, used, refurbished)? Disk drive(s): make, model, capacity, how full? Monitor and monitor connectivity? Game sources? Begin by checking Reliability History/Monitor and Event Viewer. One or both tools might be recording error codes, warnings, or informational events shortly before or during the issues.

Usually you aim for a borderless windowed experience in games that support it, since it allows smooth focus adjustments. Keep in mind there can be a slight performance hit, but Win11 appears to handle it better. Switching to fullscreen often causes rescaling or changes in refresh rate and HDR settings for a brief moment, which is more noticeable when monitors differ in type or resolution.
There are various adjustments in Windows that can help ease some of these problems, or even make them worse. For such issues, especially with particular titles, it’s best to check the game’s dedicated forum or fan communities like Reddit. These places often have more targeted answers. It’s unlikely you’ll find a universal solution for frame pacing or sync problems since each game engine handles things differently and few are designed for dual displays. The exceptions I’m aware of are usually MMO and simulation games, where using a dual head rig is standard for secondary tools like parsing software, flight maps, and instruments.
