Question PC locking or freezing during intense gaming sessions without BSOD or crash dump
Hi, I've faced some persistent problems with my PC over the years, and it has affected me differently based on what I was using or playing.
The issue is that the two screens become unresponsive, audio stops, and the mouse and keyboard stop working, though the lights remain on. I can only press the power button to switch it off and back on.
This only occurs during games or software that stress my system, but not consistently. I can play the same game for days without it happening, then it might start 15 minutes after I begin the next day. Sometimes, after uninstalling a few programs, updating drivers, or doing some maintenance, it stops for a week or two, and then it happens again randomly.
Currently, my setup includes an Intel Core i9 9900K CPU, Corsair Hydro Series cooler, MSI MPG Z390 GAMING EDGE AC motherboard, Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 RAM (32GB), Crucial MX500 SSD, a Be Quiet Silent case, Corsair HX750 PSU, and an ASUS RTX 4060 GPU.
Most components from 2019 are affected, even though I haven’t done any overclocking or major tweaks beyond enabling XMP and ERP settings.
I’ve tried undervolting the CPU before, but it still caused BSODs even at low voltages.
I haven’t noticed any overheating, and the CPU rarely reaches full load under real conditions. When I did push it for testing, it never overheated.
All drivers seem up to date, and I’ve checked with SDIO utility, but the problems persist.
I’m running out of options now.
I haven't tried but I'll attempt it this evening. Thanks.
Edit: I left it running overnight without issues.
Apologies for the delayed reply. Please send your PSU to a shop for inspection. If the problem isn't related to the PSU, consider creating a system restore point and running Driver Verifier to force a crash, which may generate a dump file in case a driver is involved. I'm not an expert, but these steps were my first attempts to resolve similar issues. Also, did you migrate Windows after installing the new SSD?
Check the Reliability History or Monitor and Event Viewer. Either tool might record error codes, warnings, or event details about the screen freezing. Use Event IDs to identify potential reasons. Forced shutdowns can damage files. Execute "dism" and "sfc /scannow" – they may detect and resolve issues.

On a system five years old, the power supply unit is also a possible cause. It might be at or close to its End of Life (EOL).
PC tip:
Another approach is to power down, unplug, and open the case. Thoroughly clean out dust and debris. Confirm that all connectors, cards, RAM, jumpers, and case connections are securely installed. Replace the CMOS battery following the instructions in the motherboard's User Guide/Manual.
