Question New PC or upgrade? Just for fun.
Question New PC or upgrade? Just for fun.
My self-build PC is almost five years old now. It's functioning fine, but I'm feeling the urge to upgrade. Either to test if a change would really help, or just for the sake of it! A lot has changed over that time, and I haven't followed the newest technology trends, so if you had this setup, would you consider an upgrade? Would you begin a fresh build? Or would you prefer to keep going with what you have? Any upcoming projects worth watching?
Current setup:
Phanteks P400A (3x stock 120mm RGB fans, 1x 120mm exhaust)
Ryzen 7 3700X (cooled by BeQuiet DARK ROCK PRO 4)
Asus TUF GAMING X570 PLUS (WI-FI) AM4 ATX Motherboard
Corsair Vengeance RGB pro 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 3200
Sapphire Radeon RX 5700 XT Pulse 8GB
PSU Rm750x 80+ Gold Modular
Patriot Viper VPN100 1tb M.2 2280 PCIe SSD
Seagate BarraCuda 2TB Desktop Hard Drive 3.5" 7200RPM
Basic Kingston 240GB SSD
Main uses:
Design software (Figma, Illustrator, Photoshop)
Plan to dive into video editing (likely Premiere Pro)
Occasional gaming (not a top priority)
Upgrading to a 5800X3D would be a simple and hassle-free choice.
If gaming ranks third on your priorities, a 5950X CPU boost and GPU upgrade might be suitable, depending on your budget. It's unclear what improvements you're seeking or if you're planning a fresh build for your specific needs. 1 and 2 would probably gain more from increased core counts and higher clock speeds over time, unless those particular games are optimized for the 5800X3D's 3D V-cache.
Both of these CPU options are worth considering. I'm curious about the advantages of each and the 3D V-cache feature (which is unfamiliar to me). From a budget standpoint, it's a good time to invest since it's a workstation, allowing me to reduce costs significantly—around 39% off my purchase. I don't want to overspend, but I'm eager to get a system that boosts efficiency. I might allocate up to £1,000 for upgrades or £2,000 for a new build.
