Hi, I understand you're facing some issues. So I received a GTX 1060 with 3GB RAM and needed a PSU with a 6-pin PCIe and higher wattage. I upgraded to a better PSU with a 6-pin but my Z220 SFF workstation only has the 6-pin version and a smaller one. I thought about getting a 24-to-6 pin adapter, but it didn't work when connected to the PSU and the PC. I experimented with the pin colors and tried resetting the CMOS, but the little light between the RAM sticks didn't turn on and the PC doesn't boot. I really appreciate any help you can provide! Hi, I used a generic Chinese PSU and the GPU needing 6 pins was removed. I'm checking if it would work with a regular GPU that worked with the original SFF PSU. I tried an older PSU in 110V mode and it failed immediately, but the original PSU worked perfectly. I can't test the new one because it lacks a power switch and the PC doesn't show any power connection, so the RAM light stays off. The adapter I used is this one.
Can you help me figure something out? I have finals in 3 days and don't want to study while all the parts I gathered aren't working. Thank you so much!

As long as both cables are connected, there’s no immediate issue unless the wiring is incorrect.
I’m guessing you’re not using 110V power, so that PSU won’t work then.
If you connect the other PSU (without linking it to the computer) by connecting the Power On pin to ground, you should be able to activate it.
Refer to the ATX documentation and look at the 24-pin connector diagram; align pin 16 accordingly.
Connect the cable to pin 16 using a wire or a metal object, matching the orientation shown.
Once connected, the PSU fan should start, which indicates progress.
For a proper test, you’ll need a voltmeter to verify the voltage.
PSUs typically require testing with a load, such as a computer or specialized equipment.
If the test succeeds and the power button remains inactive, you can permanently connect the power-on wire to ground to keep the PSU active.
This method may make shutting down the computer more difficult, as you’ll need to either disconnect the plug or use a switch or power strip.
It could also potentially force the system to start.

OK thanks but assuming it works, so you have any insight on why the pc doesn't get power and it seems like nothing is connected, and the power button functions normally when I connect the original psu, suggesting the issue might be with the psu or the adapter not delivering power to the pc, thanks again! (the light between the ram sticks stays off with the new psu)

And by the way, if I have the 24 pin connected to the adapter, how would I position the paperclip in that part?

I've only messed with a Dell one time. But I did build my own adapter using an old dual six-pin to 8-pin PCIe adapter cable.
The proprietary front panel connectors are what usually get you in trouble. I'm not sure about HP, but it is possible they have a signal coming from the motherboard that is non-standard to ATX and doesn't make a regular PSU turn on.
On the Dell they use a combo start/shutdown/reset button that is also the power LED. Never did figure out how that thing was supposed to work, so I wired the PSU to be permanently on. On that particular system I went to the trouble of turning off ACPI so that the system behaved in the old way of "Your computer is now safe to turn off", rather than going into standby mode like modern ATX systems do.
If that PSU actually works, and you can get it to turn on by shorting the power on signal to ground, then the next step would be to connect a wire between power on and ground on wire side of the connector(back) so you can still plug in your adapter.
Only other thing would be to figure out the pin out and see if that adapter was made properly. Not really something I can walk you through on a forum though.

Hi, I tried another PSU but at least it provided power to the PC. It turned out the Chinese PSU wasn't working. With the different PSUs I was getting 4 beeps, then a pause, followed by 4 more beeps and a red light on the power switch. Here is my motherboard: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/0-MAAOSwN...l1600.webp But I couldn't find out what those 4 beeps mean on my current motherboard BIOS. Putting the original SFF PSU back makes everything function normally. Thanks again!
