Question My mouse is acting unpredictably by clicking, dragging, and/or highlighting
I have restarted my PC, attempted driver updates (Windows 10 says the optimal drivers are already installed), switched to another mouse (both wired ones), and changed the USB port. The issue persists even in Safe Mode. What further steps can I take to restore proper functionality? Thank you.
You may attempt using a live Ubuntu (or another OS) flash drive or your BIOS menu if it includes mouse drivers. If the problem persists in either, the mouse is likely the cause. If the mouse is the issue, you'll likely need to replace it unless repairing is more cost-effective. Was there any liquid on it or anything similar?
To ensure comprehension of the issue:
Two confirmed working mice, previously used with other computers, exhibit identical issues on your PC — correct?
Details such as power supply specifications, hard drive information, and system status are recorded.
Check Task Manager and Resource Monitor for any unfamiliar or unusual applications/processes.
Examine both tools simultaneously but use only one at a time. Keep the window open and continue with normal activities.
Observe the changes in the tool window when mouse behavior shifts.
This process may require some testing and patience to identify the right approach.
Have you performed any antivirus or malware scans?
I don’t have any information about the PSU’s make, model, wattage, age, or the disk drive’s specifications. I’ll check the Task Manager and Resource Monitor separately. So far, nothing unusual has appeared. Windows Defender Firewall, free Avast Antivirus, and free Malwarebytes didn’t detect any malware.
Sorry for the delay. The issue was a laptop. Someone suggested turning off the touchpad because my wrist or jacket sleeves might have blocked it while using the mouse. I kept an eye on my arms, wrists, and sleeves to avoid interference, but didn’t see anything confirming the advice. I chose to disable the touchpad, and the problem disappeared. After testing again, it did come back, even though I was confident no obstruction existed. I’ll keep the touchpad disabled moving forward. I feel the issue is resolved now, so I’d say it’s solved. Thank you all for your support. I just wish it doesn’t return after the thread ends...
