CPU: Ryzen 9 9900X
GPU: RTX Aorus Master 3070
RAM: 32GB 6400MHz DDR5 RAM
Storage: 980 Samsung Pro 500GB NVMe SSD
Motherboard: Gigabyte B650M Gaming Wi-Fi (rev 1.2) (F36 Latest Bios)
CPU Cooler: Deepcool AK620 Digital
Power Supply: Corsair RM650e Gold ATX 3.1 (650W)

It failed on the first day, no bent pins, no damage, no overheating, no overclocking—just factory settings. I tried blender and after 30 seconds of shader compilation the PC froze and wouldn’t boot. A repair shop replaced the CPU and confirmed it was dead.

When I asked if the motherboard or power supply contributed, they said no, the PSU meets specifications and is high quality, and the motherboard is fine. They suggested it could be a CPU issue.

I’m worried because my motherboard has 5+2+2 VRM and thought it died due to needing better VRM (12+2+2) or possibly insufficient PSU power. I checked wattage calculators and other sites—most say 650W is more than enough. My PSU is ATX 3.1, which should handle spikes, and the GPU also recommends 650W. A PSU wouldn’t just fail the CPU; it might shut down the whole system or cause crashes.

The 3070 was in an older build with an i5-8400 and ran well with a 7-year-old 550W PSU, so I’m inclined to think the PSU is okay.

With the CPU returned for replacement (new one arriving), can I reinstall it into the same setup knowing it was defective, or should I upgrade? Any advice would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

The RTX 3000 line is known for its high transient load spikes. Users were recommended to overprovision their PSU wattage when buying, especially if the unit isn’t highly reliable. If your PSU is close to a solid build but doesn’t meet the required power, consider an 850W model instead.

I’m worried because my motherboard has 5+2+2 VRM and failed, possibly due to insufficient VRM quality or a low PSU wattage.

If you were thinking about pairing a Ryzen 9 9900x with another board, you should have explored a well-designed VRM motherboard. The B650 or B850 from MSI’s Tomahawk or Mortar series would have been suitable options.

weak vrm wouldn't destroy the CPU, but it might prevent the CPU from reaching maximum performance because of overheating issues.
