Question MS Word document containing over 1000 pages formatted for A3 paper size.
A brief online search revealed what I think are essential specs for Word in Microsoft 365 (previously Office 365).
"Word usually needs less memory and can operate well with small amounts of RAM, even when handling big files."
"For Office 365 (now Microsoft 365), the minimum is 4 GB for the 32-bit version; 4 GB for the 64-bit version.
Recommended: 4 GB for the 32-bit version; 8 GB or more for the 64-bit version."
I wouldn’t try to run a Windows 10 or 11 system with less than the 8GB RAM suggested for Word 64-bit, so you’d likely be fine with 16GB for word processing and other light applications.
More demanding programs need additional memory, which is why I opt for 32GB or 64GB in newer computers.
Microsoft Copilot suggests aligning hardware setup with your workload requirements, especially when handling over 1000 pages in A3 format.
CPU:
Minimum: Intel Core i7 (12th generation or newer) or AMD Ryzen 7.
Recommended: Intel Core i9 or AMD Ryzen 9 for intensive multitasking and extensive layouts.
RAM:
Minimum: 16 GB.
Recommended: 32 GB — guarantees smooth navigation and editing through more than 1000 A3 pages.
Storage:
NVMe SSD (512 GB or 1 TB). Quick read/write speeds are essential for managing large files.
Graphics:
Basic integrated graphics suffice for basic tasks like Word processing; a mid‑range GPU such as NVIDIA RTX 3050/3060 is beneficial if you also use design software or run Excel/Power BI alongside.
Display:
Minimum resolution 1080p, preferably 1440p or 4K, to ensure clear rendering of Arabic characters on extensive A3 layouts.
Office Version:
Opt for 64‑bit Office — it supports larger files and higher memory demands compared to the 32‑bit version.
I wouldn't allocate the money to an i9 or Ryzen 9 based on your needs. Better use it for additional storage or a superior screen.
What device are you operating with right now? Is it performing adequately in Word? If not, please share specifics about its CPU type, memory capacity, motherboard, storage devices, etc. Your experience with lengthy documents has led you to think about dividing a 1,000-page file into smaller parts. A dedicated Word machine doesn’t need to be exceptionally fast or costly—most office computers are quite basic. If you’re purchasing a new system, avoid outdated Intel 12th, 13th, or 14th generation chips and opt for the newer Intel Core Ultra 265 or a contemporary 9,000 series AMD processor. As @kanewolf notes, you don’t need to invest heavily in an i9/9xxx series CPU unless you frequently edit 4K videos or play modern games. For Word tasks, many CPUs include an integrated GPU, so you can often get by without a separate GPU card. It would be useful to know your budget if we could clarify this.
