Question Low budget 12,13 gen mb
Question Low budget 12,13 gen mb
1 or 2 m.2 slot required, 1= need PCI e x4 for additional SSD
Minimum 2 fan headers, 1 rear exhaust, 1 fan header (corsair 5000D airflow tg)
6-8 USB ports on the back
B660 should have BIOS flash button since I’m planning to use a 13 gen i3 13100f for enhanced performance over the i3 12100f
Reasonable chance you won't need to update BIOS even if you buy B660 and 13th gen.
Quite rare to find only 1 M.2 port.
6 or 8 USB that must all be on the back might restrict you a bit?
Look at Gigabyte AORUS series and MSI Mag Mortar. Both have micro ATX variants and have good feature sets.
If you demand bottom end micro ATX due to budget, you may have to give up something in features or components on the board.
Many motherboards are designed to accommodate four standard 2.5" SATA devices. There isn't a noticeable performance difference compared to using X4 PCIe M.2 slots. These components don't seem to affect overall speed. It's worth noting that these specifications were established over a year ago, so new boards from that time should support the 13th generation BIOS. The 13100 processor is praised for its speed, and the included laminar flow cooler performs well. It's advisable not to rush purchases and consider spending a bit more for better performance. Integrated graphics can also help with quick synchronization when issues arise. For those on a tighter budget, integrated graphics can provide functionality until a suitable graphics card becomes available.
going for an oem
cost is 91 euros for a 12100f and 100 euros for a 13100f plus shipping around 5.5 euros. The single core version with the 13100f works well, it’s close to the 12100f. My CPU reaches 5ghz and has high pl1, so it doesn’t throttle. I tested it with 4 cores and FPS stayed the same. Compared to a 13100f versus a 10700k on YouTube, power usage dropped by half during gaming (8 or 9 out of 10 games). The 13100f is cheaper or at least half the price of the HLAF models, and it’s faster than the 11600k. Upgradability options include 12600k, 13400, 14 cores, i7 and i9 for more power. A 13400 should handle gaming and streaming well even without daily use.
The Nzxt NZXT N5 Z690 meets all my requirements without being costly (previously I used an NZXT Z590). It supports eight USB ports for four M.2 SSDs, and the BIOS includes a flashback feature. The ASUS PRIME B660M-A D4 or B760M-A D4 are similar but have fewer ports and lack the BIOS flashback function. The main differences between the B660 and B760 lie in port count and additional features.

I purchased a CPU and an M.2 storage device. I bought the CPU and M.2 together from the same retailer, which is why the shipping was included. I did not buy the 13100 because I am confident it works out of the box with any LGA 1700 M.2, irrespective of the chipset or whether it supports BIOS flashing or not. Removing 2-4 FPS will save about 9 euros (OEM).
The ASRock B760M PG LIGHTNING/D4 is priced at 114 euros. This model has 3 PCIe slots plus one extra X16 slot for up to four drives, two M.2 slots, and six USB ports (most of which are USB-C). It includes heatsinks for an SSD and VRM, and the price is 114 euros.
I have a NZXT motherboard and I’m aware of its BIOS (NZXT is made by ASRock). The board supports 3 PCIe slots and one extra X16 slot that can run up to four drives. It has two M.2 slots, six USB ports (with one USB-C), heatsinks for an SSD and VRM. The price is 114 euros.
I am looking for a more affordable option with a CPU that supports higher power limits and TDP. My current 11600K runs above 200 watts at 5.0GHz without throttling, and it’s smooth during gaming. I can upgrade to a 10-core processor later if needed. The heat is lower, making it possible to run my CPU cooler at 700-800 RPM at full load. Upgrading to 10 cores or more is feasible.
I hope someone is interested in selling an i5 or i7 at a low price soon, as they might need a 14th generation processor in 2-3 months. There are almost no used 12th or 13th generation CPUs available, only in PCs.
I’m considering trying a modern 4-core CPU with an integrated graphics unit, even though some people dislike the 12100F and the RX6700 XT works well for general tasks.
