My computer stops working when I walk over a specific area on my office floor. To make matters worse, I have two large German Shepherds weighing 2x40kg who live in the same space and refuse to stay away from that spot, contributing to the problem. It’s really frustrating!

Given the situation on carpeted floors and the occurrence only when stepping on a specific area, it seems there might be an issue with static charge. It's intriguing that it happens just in one spot, suggesting a possible grounding or contact with metal.

How the wiring in your house is arranged. Could the cable for the outlet be located beneath that area and becoming compressed when weight is placed on it?

At work, a similar issue occurred. While removing the carpet tiles, sharp grit particles pierced the flat mains cables on the concrete floor, leading to brief electrical faults. After removing the carpet, inspect the area for a main cable being compressed between floorboards and a joist. If the installation wasn't precise, such problems could arise.

Thanks for the fast responses. I had similar thoughts about what could be hiding under the floorboards, but I assumed it wouldn't be caused by power from another room. It's also been quite irregular—before this week it hadn't occurred in roughly six weeks, but now it's happening about seven times a day this week 😭

It must be terrible considering the chances of tainting information.

Even worse for the chances of it being launched from the window!!
I didn’t want to face this, but I just moved my office and placed the PC on the desk instead of the small drawers cabinet. I don’t remember having this problem when my office was arranged like this a year ago.
I’ll see how I handle it over the next hours, days, weeks, or months. I haven’t managed to trigger the crash yet, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen tomorrow when the dog sneezes and I have a few hours of unsaved work waiting to be lost!
Thanks all

I experienced a similar problem where a component was causing a short in my laptop, leading it to repeatedly turn off the fuse even when not in use. Usually at night, the laptop and desk were near an outlet connected to the same fuse as my bedroom alarm clock. This often caused me to wake up late due to the fuse tripping during the night. I should note that I was using the laptop as a desktop, which meant it remained stationary.

I experienced problems in the past where my monitor would flicker each time I sat in my office chair. Another ongoing issue is that the PC will wake up every time I pass by or turn on a desk fan connected to another outlet. I mentioned both concerns and received little response. It seems like the problem might be located under the floor.
