Question COD MW3 - Very low FPS?
Question COD MW3 - Very low FPS?
Hey everyone,
I just purchased my first COD and decided to go with the MW3 version since my notebook is fairly old. I downloaded it from Steam. Games like CS:GO, GTA5, or ARK are running smoothly without any issues—even at higher graphics settings for GTA 5 and CS:GO. I expected MW3 wouldn’t cause too many problems, but I’m not surprised.
I’m currently trying to play offline and in single-player campaign or solo survival mode. My FPS stays under 35 during the early stages. After a few minutes of actual gameplay, it drops to around 20 FPS and then falls below 10 FPS after another 5–10 minutes. At that point, even the menu’s FPS is between 15 and 20. It only recovers when I close and restart the game, which brings it back to about 35 FPS initially but then drops again.
I’ve set the graphics to the lowest possible (shadows and effects turned off). I tried playing in full screen or window mode without any improvement. Closing all background programs didn’t help either. I restarted my notebook and tried again—still no change. My drivers are up to date, and I checked the task manager during gameplay; CPU, RAM, and GPU usage never exceed 50–60%.
Here’s my setup:
- Windows 10 notebook (64-bit)
- Intel Core i7 - 6500U CPU @ 2.50GHz
- 8 GB RAM
- GPU: Intel HD Graphics 520
- GPU 2 (dedicated): NVIDIA GeForce 940MX
I really appreciate any advice you can offer!
In the past few days I conducted some research, but wasn’t able to notice a big improvement in the single-player game’s performance (FPS). Although I haven’t played multiplayer in MW3 yet, I installed and ran the mod "IW5 Plutonium" just to observe how it affected the game. It’s interesting that even with better graphics in IW5 and higher settings, the FPS stayed high (55 to 75 FPS = playable). When I lowered the graphics settings, the FPS improved further. After removing the mod and restarting the vanilla single-player version of MW3, the original performance problems reappeared as described in my first post.
I also checked my CPU and GPU temperatures while playing. The CPU reached up to 85°C and the GPU to 55°C. However, I don’t believe temperature is the cause of the low FPS, since I experience similar temps when using IW5, CS:GO or GTA5, and I don’t face major performance issues.
Maybe you have suggestions on what else could be tried to get MW3 single-player running? Thanks!
