Question Cheap Gaming Rig Idea (Gaming Laptop)
Question Cheap Gaming Rig Idea (Gaming Laptop)
Most gaming laptops with a 3070 or higher GPU, especially those with 8GB+ VRAM (compared to the 3060’s 6GB), typically start at around £700 and can go up to about £1000. With Thunderbolt 3/4 support for external GPUs, a 3060 Ti (8GB) or an ARC A770 (16GB) would be reasonable, bringing the total near £250 to £300. Since most laptops include a desktop GPU, using a laptop might mean weaker components due to TDP limits.
True. But the CPU spec is quite good. I was limited by not having a dedicated GPU, and while iGPUs work, many of the better laptops offer more value for money compared to this model.
But you wouldn't take a desktop just by visiting a friend's place or something. Of course, an e-gpu case might not work, but it would be much simpler to carry around (so it'd be a laptop with a compact box for the e-gpu).
If you have the budget to spend £1000 then it wouldn't be worth it. The laptop in question also has a U CPU, although it is capable; it only has 2 P cores and the sustained boost speeds won't be very high. This isn't the best choice for gaming and won't fully utilize a desktop 3060. A £520 laptop is reasonable, but it's better to invest in a higher-end machine with a powerful mobile CPU and built-in 3060. My opinion is that you won't enjoy using an e-gpu if you value portability, and if not, a desktop would be more practical. I've considered e-gpus myself, and my advice is that a gaming laptop offers a smoother and more efficient experience.
Avoid connecting an RTX 4090 with a Thunderbolt eGPU dock. Risk losing performance; consider a proper gaming laptop.
I believe there will be a performance reduction that the OP might not have considered.
