Question Black screen crashes in Oblivion Remastered, resolving with Core Performance Boost fixes?
I have been using the newly released Oblivion Remastered for some time, yet in the open world I experience frequent crashes. At the moment, I possess a save file, but when I activate the ability "Night Eye," it almost always causes an immediate crash. This situation has allowed me to identify the likely cause of the problem.
When the game crashes, a black screen appears, the monitor signal is lost, USB devices are disabled, and the computer fans remain on. A reset is the only effective solution.
PC Specifications
Motherboard: MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC
GPU: 6900XT
CPU: Ryzen 5800X
RAM: 2 x 16GB Kingston HyperX Predator 3600MHz
What I attempted to fix:
- Installed the latest AMD driver (using DDU in safe mode to remove the previous one)
- Updated the BIOS to the most recent version
- Disabled XMP profile
- Reduced GPU voltage by 10%
- Lowered GPU power settings (-10%)
- Disabled all AMD features in Adrenalin
- Set CPU settings: SVM / Core Performance Boost / Precision Boost Overdrive
Only adjusting the last option resolved the crash. I then tried enabling SVM again, but crashes resumed when CPB was reactivated.
I also attempted to run PBO settings in ECO mode and adjusted Voltage +10 in curve optimizer, though these changes did not help.
During stress testing with OCCT, nothing occurred (using standard BIOS settings).
Currently, Oblivion Remastered is the only game that triggers this exact crash, but it appears to be a hardware issue. It seems turning off Core Performance Boost might still indicate a hardware fault.
Clearly, disabling CPB isn’t a viable solution, as it significantly reduces CPU performance. Any suggestions on how to reach a better outcome would be appreciated.
I suspect this isn’t related to power or temperature problems, since adjusting voltage and underpowering the GPU didn’t resolve the issue.
Precision boost overclocking combined with CPB might exceed safe limits for the CPU. If oblivion remastered runs as a single thread, increasing one core could trigger crashes, while all cores being stressed would naturally reduce power usage to prevent damage. Does it still work with CPB active but PBO disabled?
