Execute the Windows Update and verify that the latest Windows 8.1 version is chosen. The update icon should stay in the taskbar (adjustable), and every opened application will display an X with a minimizer option.

It wasn't exactly what I needed—I noticed you could create modern UI app shortcuts on the desktop, but I was aiming for smaller windows so I could keep an email app open without opening a browser.
