Hi everyone!
I want to begin by saying I'm not a tech expert, my computer skills are limited to the basics.
Anyway, my wife and I both use our gaming laptops for playing games, we've been doing this for years and have cleaned them quite often for maintenance (our house is really dusty), and changed the thermal paste. This always turned out well.
But when I opened up my wife's HP Victus, I was surprised to find the thermal pads stuck to the heatsink instead of the usual paste. Since we only had paste on hand, I cleaned it off with alcohol and applied it to all areas where the old putty clay had been.
Was this the right decision? Or should I try finding the clay putty again and open it up once more?
Have a good day and thank you all!

Welcome to the forums, newcomer! HP offers several laptops in their Victus range. Which one are you using? A model and SKU would be very helpful. Regarding the thermal paste, pads, or putty, if the space between surfaces is very small, use thermal paste. If the gap is bigger, opt for thermal putty. What paste did you choose?

Hi! Thank you for your response.
The device in question is an HP Victus Gaming 15-fb0882nd. The paste I used is Earkings EK-1, possibly not from the official brand but it performed well in a previous backup laptop we had.
It's tricky to gauge the distance between the sink and the components, but I assume they're larger given the putty involved.
The laptop's thermal performance is decent right now, reaching around mid 70s (Celsius) during intense CPU use in games. However, I'm concerned about its long-term stability.
As mentioned, I'd be happy to reinstall it and fix it properly if it seems safe to do so.
