Question about TDR timeouts and frequent BSODs on PC
Hello, two months back I made a questionable choice by using questionable cables on my PC and linked Molex power from the PSU to my USB 3 port on my old motherboard. The machine failed to start, and I thought I'd ruined everything. I brought my CPU, RAM, and motherboard to a service center, where they checked the CPU and RAM—everything seemed okay—and replaced a socket on my motherboard. Still, I went ahead and swapped the motherboard. I also tested the RAM myself after the service, for a few hours, and it worked fine, probably...
PC Specifications:
CPU: Ryzen 7 7700
RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 2x32 DDR5 6GHz with XMP profile
Old motherboard: Asus X670E-Pro Wifi
New motherboard: MSI MPG X870E Carbon Wifi
GPU 1: Palit RTX 3080 10GB
GPU 2: Intel Arc A750
PSU 1: Chieftec A80 750W
PSU 2: Chieftec A80 650W
Fast boot is active
XMP profile is enabled (no issues before my mistake)
AMD PBO - I tried turning it on and off.
Why are there two PSUs and two GPUs? I'll explain later.
After a week or so, I began experiencing various crashes, with 90% of the time the system didn't save any data. The BSODs I've seen include:
- 9F
- 116 [x, x, x, 4]
- 117
- 119 [2, x, x, x]
- 1a1 [x, 0, 0, 0]
- 1b0 [2, x, 108, x]
- 141 [x, x, 0, 4], [x, x, 0, 0], [x, x, 0, 2de4]
- 144 [3003, x, x, x], [100a, x, x, x]
I've tried toggling AMD PBO, and it seems to make the problem worse. With PBO on, I saw a single BSOD—just the 9F one I'd encountered before. When PBO was active, the screen would sometimes go black and then return, possibly due to power issues. When turned off, the problems mostly vanished except during sleep mode restarts or after switching to Intel Arc. Before that, I had device error 43 for the 3080 twice. After reinstalling the GPU driver and replacing the PSU, the issue disappeared temporarily. But after installing Intel Arc, several apps crashed, and the 141 BSOD appeared again. I replaced the backup PSU, which worked well for a while. Then I reinstalled the 3080 and it functioned properly for a few days... until now 😭
I'm not sure why this is happening—maybe the PSU is faulty or the GPU is, but I need to figure out if the problem persists. The only other option I considered is using a different GPU, like the 1660 Super. All the logs I have are:
*HERE*
I don't have any ideas about what to try next, except the ones mentioned above (but I doubt it will help, and testing would take time).
My concern is a weak link in the connection. Or perhaps a part that hasn’t been properly installed or placed.
Noted: "I used questionable cables on my PC and connected Molex power from the PSU to my USB 3 port on the old motherboard, the computer didn't start, I assumed I messed everything up."
Make sure you only use the cables that come with any specific PSU.
Also investigate one change at a time and give more time between adjustments.
Check Reliability History/Monitor and Event Viewer for any error codes, warnings, or informational events logged just before or during the BSODs or other strange restarts.
You can review individual entries for further insight. These details might help or not be useful.
The timeline in Reliability History/Monitor could show a recurring issue.
In general, a growing number of different errors often points to a PSU issue.
Keep in mind that PSUs supply three voltage levels (3.3, 5, and 12) to various system parts. Any disruption or out-of-range voltages can lead to problems.
Pay attention to identifying the likely causes and reasons.
I also considered this, so after switching to a 650W PSU I double-checked everything was connected correctly.
I attempted to link the old customer display to my PC using a COM port power delivery cable and another USB 3 cable, ensuring the MOLEX connector powered directly into the USB port. The issue only appeared after a black screen appeared.
🙁
Over several days, it seems these problems might emerge multiple times before further adjustments are needed?
Yes, I’ve gathered all the errors from the Reliability Monitor, and they also show up in the Event Viewer. However, no clear pattern has been identified so far—except for fewer errors when AMD PBO is turned off, and none during internet browsing. Interestingly, these issues don’t occur under heavy load, such as when the GPU is at half or full utilization during games or stress tests.
