When purchasing a PlayStation controller, Steam will configure it automatically so you can play all games.

Steam is improving its support. I tried an older Dual Shock as a generic controller with an emulator whose name I no longer remember...SCP Toolkit. It had some issues but generally functioned okay. If you haven’t yet obtained a controller, the Xbox controllers (especially older models) work well with W10/11 and connect via built-in Bluetooth or a dongle. The newer ones need a special dongle or USB connection. Both types are compatible with Steam and other launchers.
