I'm looking forward to getting the Rift S soon, but I'm concerned about the 80hz refresh rate while gaming on a 144hz monitor. If I can't tolerate anything below around 100fps in most games, I'd appreciate your experience with lower refresh rates on VR headsets.

It varies from individual to individual. It isn't the same as checking monitor refresh rates either. A low refresh rate in VR can be significantly more bothersome.
