What programs do you use in college? Having a large cache is fine, it will just write over it when you run out of free memory, what really matters is the 7-14 used which is significantly less than your 32GB.

What CPU and motherboard you intend to use? The DDR4-4400 DRAM grouping doesn't guarantee compatibility with the CPU's IMC or motherboard speed. DDR4-3000 ~ 3600 is usually ideal. Cl14 timings help, but higher speeds like DDR4-3400 or CL16 are better.

Others have mentioned that memory needs vary depending on your tasks. What software are you running? Are you playing games, editing videos, creating models, rendering images, working with audio, or managing virtual machines?

Evga z490 dark paired with Intel 10850k. I understand the motherboard can support it, but I found a note on pcpartspicker about the RAM voltage being higher than recommended—Intel suggests 1.4V instead of 1.5V. I believe opting for a 32GB 3200MHz setup would be more cost-effective. I’d prefer a 4000MHz model over the 3600, but a 2x16GB 4000MHz CL16 costs around $270. I’m leaning toward the 3200 MHz because I doubt it’ll make a noticeable difference, though I’d like to have some really fast RAM.

I’ll look into what’s happening while I play, but the 7 to 14 range seems idle or focused on tasks. Often I don’t realize I’m exiting full screen until later.

I believe gaming would be the most demanding activity. University tasks are common, with many browser windows for research or online work via publisher sites. I’d prefer to stay flexible, not wanting to upgrade if I wanted to start video editing or something similar. My priority is overall performance rather than speed above 3200MHz, and I’m still getting the hang of things.
