Question about PSU not working when SATA SSD is connected, but issues arise without it. (Details)
Hello,
I own a HX1200 modular PSU that usually connects several HDDs via one SATA power cable. Recently, when trying to connect a 4TB SSD using another aftermarket SATA cable, the PSU failed to power on. After removing the SSD, the system would turn on but would then operate very slowly and with strange behavior. Initially, nothing appeared on the screen, but after adjusting the GPU and power cables, it eventually booted but was extremely sluggish during startup and in the desktop environment. During troubleshooting I did the following:
- Disconnected all other non-OS drives
- Reset CMOS
- Reinstalled GPU driver using DDU
- Verified all connectors were properly seated
- Changed SATA ports on the PSU and motherboard
- Tested with different HDMI/DP cables
- Ran an SFC scan (found and fixed corrupt files)
- Performed HDD health check (normal status)
I haven’t heard any odd noises from the PSU and there are no unusual odors.
use only manufacturer-certified power cables, not any third-party options. provide full system specifications including the make and model of every component.
Hey, thanks for the update. I’m switching to the original SATA cable now, not the aftermarket one anymore, and it’s connected to the OS drive. Here are my system details:

4x 32GB modules; 4 individual 32GB kits; 2 separate 64GB kits (2x 32GB) or a single 128GB kit (4x 32GB)?
