Question about PC upgrade advice needed!
Question about PC upgrade advice needed!
Hey! I've been struggling with Ark Survival Ascended lately, mainly because of the persistent lag issues that make it almost impossible to play smoothly. It feels like it's time for a PC upgrade.
My current setup looks like this:
CPU: Intel® Core i5-7500 CPU @ 3.40GHz
Motherboard: Asus Strix B250H GAMING
Memory: G Skill 8GB x 2
Corsair 8GB x 2
Video Card: MSI GeForce RTX 4060 VENTUS 2X BLACK 8G OC Gaming Graphics Card - 8GB GDDR6X, PCI Express Gen 4, 128-bit, 3x DP v 1.4a, HDMI 2.1a
Power Supply: 450W Corsair VS
Approximate Purchase Date: ASAP
Budget Range: All in (purchase and shipping) £500 - £750
Usage Priority: Gaming → Watching Youtube/Movies → General life work
Are you buying a monitor?
No parts to upgrade: CPU, Motherboard, RAM, PSU
Do you need an operating system?
No
Preferred websites for parts: whichever offers the best value and reliable service
Location: United Kingdom, England
Parts preferences: no specific brand, just compatibility and performance
Overclocking: No
SLI or Crossfire: Maybe
Monitor resolution: 1920x1080
Extra note: I mainly want to play the new Ascended version, but it's not working with my current specs. Most importantly, why am I upgrading?
My system needs to keep up with next-gen gaming!
I have plenty of SSD drives and a mid-tower case that should handle it, plus enough cooling fans.
Any expert advice would be really appreciated. I'm still unsure about the budget but want to know which parts are most important and what the cheapest options might be!
Thanks in advance.
Welcome to the forums, newcomer! Please format your thread according to the information provided in this thread; *How to Ask for New Build or Upgrade Advice*. Initially, it's important to acknowledge where respect is appropriate—this adaptation comes from the Animal's *How To Ask For New Build Advice* Sticky. I developed it because many users are currently seeking upgrade guidance both here and on the CPU forums, and I believe... forums. the community can offer helpful suggestions. You should mention your location, budget (with a specific amount), and preferred purchasing site. Is this upgrade only for Ark Survival Ascended? At first glance, that PSU isn't ideal. You have two sets of RAM kits from different brands. Would you like to share links to both? For curiosity, what GPU were you using before the RTX4060? Also, please include the make and model of your case.
Your CPU might be the issue, but the PSU should also be replaced. You'll likely need a new CPU, motherboard, and possibly RAM. Combining two RAM kits could also lead to complications. Do you live close to a Microcenter?
Hey, thanks for getting back quickly. Sorry about the incorrect format—I'm updating it right now. The main game is Ark Ascended, but there are possibilities for future titles as well. Right now I'm having trouble locating the RAM links. I only remember having a 2 8GB GSkill Ripjaws DDR3 and a 2 8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3. My previous GPU was a GTX1060... Old XD.
The case is another issue; I'm not sure where to find it since it came from PC Specialist about seven years ago!
Hi
logainofhades
Thanks for your response.
I don’t live near a Micro Center, so I should have mentioned the UK location. The budget for parts is roughly £500 to £750, and I’d prefer something cheaper!
Since you have DDR3, you'll also need RAM. I recommend an AM5 motherboard, which offers room for future upgrades.

I reviewed the system requirements and found you fall short in both CPU and GPU categories, which affects the overall setup.
I don’t think it’s wise to purchase a new graphics card before upgrading your CPU and its matching system. The following represents the essential requirements for a current setup. You might invest more in the CPU up to a 9700x, but that would be near your budget limit.
Hey everyone, thank you so much for your assistance in locating the necessary components!
I’ve compiled a list of parts I’m considering purchasing and just wanted to confirm with you all if everything fits together properly.

Based on your selections, you’d opt for these minor adjustments for different reasons. The Phantom Spirit would be an improved iteration of the identical CPU cooler and is marginally more affordable. No modifications needed to the motherboard, PSU, or CPU itself. Switch RAM to the G Skill Flare kit due to its EXPO profile tailored for AMD CPUs, ensuring seamless compatibility right away. I’ve learned that Corsair vengeance units sometimes encounter problems with AMD processors. The Western Digital Black SN770 offers comparable pricing to the Crucial P3 Plus but delivers slightly better performance. If you require extra fans for the case, the Arctic Freezer P12s in all sizes are strongly advised.
