Hello friends,
How are you all? I’m a technician specializing in laptops and computers, and I’m planning a project using my own machine. Some people in my country think I don’t know much about technology, but they say the world doesn’t work the way I expect. To get some advice, I reached out to TomHardware for their expert opinion.

Here are the details: I own an Olivetti P1420, which you might be familiar with. Around 2011, Olivetti stopped producing laptops. Right now, I have a Pentium B960 and a second-generation Intel Pentium with Sandy Bridge. My motherboard’s chipset is HM65, my BIOS is America MegaTrends Inc., version 4.6.4, and the CPU microcode is 0X2f.

My goal was to replace the Pentium B960 with a Core I7 2640M. Both have the same TDP—35W—and use the same PGA988 socket. I’d appreciate your thoughts on this upgrade idea from someone with more experience.

Thank you all for taking the time to read me.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer! Here is a list of processors compatible with the HM65 chipset; https://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Intel_(ch...press.html. Keep in mind that if the laptop manufacturer had a whitelist for processor support, certain models might still lack compatibility. I should note your method is solid because you're maintaining the same TDP as your existing processor. When reinstalling cooling, consider using high-quality thermal paste and pads, and don't forget to clean the cooler vents to ensure optimal thermal and performance conditions.
