Question About Memory Upgrade
Question About Memory Upgrade
I never shared this here before, just a long-time lurker. Anywhoo..
I own a GIGABYTE B650M AORUS ELITE AX motherboard paired with an AMD 5 8600G.
Right now I have
G.SKILL Flare X5 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 6400
My setup and the programs I need to run are pushing the limits. I'm using 28GiB out of my 30GiB.
In short, I should upgrade the RAM. With prices going up, it's hard to decide what's best for me.
I
ALWAYS
since around 2005, have chosen G.Skill RAM. I’m open to switching if the cost fits. No guarantees, though.
Given that I currently have 32GB (2x16GB), should I add another 2x16GB? I recall RAM speeds must match closely to avoid hitting the lowest performance level. Also, I've heard some users facing issues with 4x DDR5 sticks.
Should I replace the existing RAM and opt for 2x32GB? Or go for 2x48GB? I see good deals on those.
Where should I look? If you think I’ve lost everything, maybe ask!
Although the QVL doesn't indicate support for speed or capacity in Zen 4, it does for Zen 5 and the IMC in the 8000 series works well, so it seems acceptable.
Verify compatibility before purchasing.
Visit the RAM website and use their configurator.
Input your motherboard make/model and processor details to check if the required RAM package appears.
A 2 stick kit tends to be more affordable.
Ensure your BIOS is up to date; RAM problems are often resolvable.
First, confirm whether you genuinely need additional RAM.
Windows retains unused code in RAM until it’s needed again.
Not all entries may be actively utilized.
During full load, open Task Manager and check the resource monitor.
Examine the memory section and the hard fault rate.
If the hard fault rate exceeds 1 per second, consider adding more RAM.
I discovered some improved RAM sticks.
Kingston Fury Beast 64GB (2x32GB) 6400MT/s DDR5 CL32 Desktop Memory | AMD Expo | Kit of 2 | KF564C32BBEK2-64
For $295
I verified the RAM model with the motherboard's QLV, and it matches.
Regarding RAM usage: I didn’t include this since I’m not using Windows; I’m running EndeavourOS (based on Arch).
My BIOS is up to date.
The board supports up to 128GB, so 64GB should be fine.
Edit: My VM isn’t active, but when it is, performance spikes.
