Question about MB chipset
Do you have any detailed information about chipsets available? I just received a Xeon E3-1220 processor and am planning to replace my older Core 2 Quad Q9650 system. I already have most of what I need except a motherboard. On eBay I found several used Dell or HP boards for around $20, which should be sufficient, but there are many options with different chipsets making it hard to decide. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Wikipedia typically provides a clear reference, making this the source here. However, be careful with Dell/HP boards as they often use non-standard configurations, such as power connectors and panel adapters, and may have unique requirements. Additionally, since it's a Xeon processor, some boards are strict about only supporting desktop chips on desktop models.
I wouldn't bother unless you purchase the motherboard for around $10... if your Q9650 system supports DDR2, you'd also need to buy DDR3 or DDR4 modules. The Q9650 scores 2400 points, E3-1220 scores 3850... an Athlon 200GE scores 4100 points, and it's a dual-core CPU that's so slow that nobody wants it.
Many have mentioned the challenges of locating a suitable board and DDR3 RAM. It might be more cost-effective and simpler to obtain a newer CPU, motherboard, and RAM package instead. This component seems limited to server configurations.
Thanks for the chipset links! I didn’t think about the DDR3 memory needs. After reaching out to my friend who provided the CPU, he still had the original motherboard. He only has 4GB of RAM, but another 4GB wouldn’t be a big change...my time and effort are free, though I don’t have much of a computer budget. My Q9650 is fine for what I need, but for about $20 I’d prefer a slight boost in performance.
