Question about low GPU and CPU usage in games.
Question about low GPU and CPU usage in games.
Hello, I’ve been playing GTA V recently and noticed that the GPU usage stays around 50-60 percent, while CPU usage remains nearly consistent outdoors. However, indoors—especially during cutscenes—I see a significant drop. GPU utilization jumps up to about 90 percent, but then the clock speed drops to around 1850 MHz, which is much lower than the 1950–1990 range I’m used to.
I’ve been running at 1080p ultra settings since my monitor is also 1080p (144 Hz). But because of this problem, my FPS has dropped considerably. My system runs on a 1TB HDD (7200 RPM) with a 256 GB SSD dedicated to Windows and editing software. The game is quite large, so I’ve tried almost everything except reinstalling Windows (I’m using the latest version), with no success. I also searched online before sharing this issue, but found nothing that matches my situation.
This kind of problem has appeared in other titles like Metro Exodus and Spider-Man Remastered as well. I haven’t played any more AAA games yet, but I suspect it’s not just a game issue—it might be related to software or possibly hardware problems, though I’m not sure.
In GTA V, when the GPU usage reaches about 60 percent, temperatures rise to around 68°C. During cutscenes where the GPU is near 90 percent, temps climb to about 75°C, which seems excessive. (Maybe because my location is getting warmer lately.)
Here are my PC specifications:
- Ryzen 5 3600 (stock speed) with Coolermaster air cooler
- Asus Dual Rtx 3060ti OC model
- MSI B550-A-PRO motherboard
- 32 GB RAM (32000 MHz, dual channel)
- Cooler Master 650W 80+ Bronze power supply
- Latest GPU drivers and Windows 11 22H2
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I really value my PC and can get anxious about these matters. Any suggestions would be welcome.
P.S. – I consider myself somewhat tech-savvy, knowing a few things but not being the smartest, so please don’t be rude if I’m wrong. Also, I posted this in the Graphics Card section because I wasn’t sure where to share it, and it’s new on the site.
Are you sure about your motherboard BIOS version right now? Have you used DUD to delete all GPU drivers and then reinstalled the newest one from Nvidia's support site via an elevated command, such as right-clicking the installer and selecting Run as Administrator?
Hi, thank you. The BIOS version is 2022. I used DUD to uninstall and reinstall drivers while running the game as administrator. I haven’t tried it yet since the game is from Epic Games and it won’t open without it.
