I bought a refurbished Dell laptop for a lower price a few years back and it still functions properly. I’m planning to upgrade its RAM and storage, but because it’s an older model, I just want to verify the hardware compatibility before making any purchases. It’s a Dell Inspiron 15 5585 with an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor, Radeon Vega Mobile Graphics, 8 GB RAM, and a BC501 NVMe SK Hynix 256GB SSD. I’m fairly sure I can replace the current SSD with a Samsung 980 and perform a clean OS installation. For the RAM, I found a couple of kits on Amazon that seem compatible. I’m mainly looking for a couple more options to double-check compatibility, but any advice would be appreciated.

Hey there,
PCIe 4 drives tend to get warmer than PCIe 3 models. A Samsung 970 Pro could be a better fit than the 980 in this scenario. These work with your laptop:

You should probably notice that just one RAM slot is open for swapping. The stick is likely already soldered in.

I discovered a disassembly, near 5:20, where he swapped the RAM and it seems no solder was used. I plan to open the case and verify further.

Among the Dell machines i've worked with recently, the 15" and bigger models are the only ones where serviceable parts are still feasible. This was a key consideration when choosing an Inspiron with the 8th generation Intel. The XPS series comes as they are, and the smaller Inspirons appear to be too. Even then, my current Inspiron has one soldered 8GB stick and one empty slot. I replaced the HDD with an SSD, added a Crucial stick for 16GB, and utilized the available M.2 slot. It still works well for the price I'm paying.

Opened the laptop and found the RAM to be easily removable.
Extracted them, reinstalled without any problems.

Found a Corsair 2x16 memory kit. Also noticed some problems with the Samsung 980, likely PCIe 3.0.

Beyond capacity, there is no improvement in performance with the Samsung 980.

The current installation includes a BC501 NVMe SK Hynix 256GB SSD.
Benchmark results show Samsung 980 performance.
Could the 980 be affected by the hardware?
