Hello, I’d like to connect a single monitor, keyboard, and mouse across different devices. I have a DP and a USB KVM that works, but the monitor isn’t detected on either machine—on the desktop it works with the DP alone without the KVM. Could you suggest cables so I can get it set up? I need a miniDP to connect from Surface to the KVM, and a DP to HDMI cable from the KVM to the monitor. Should both connections be bi-directional, active, and powered? Thanks a lot.

Required video connectivity setup:
Surface Pro 6 [mini DP port] < --- [mini DP plug] ====DP cable ==== [DP plug] ---> [DP port IN] KVM switch [ DP Port OUT] < --- [ DP plug] ==== HDMI cable ====[HDMI plug] ---> Monitor.
Adjust and refine your diagram as needed.
What is the required make and model for the KVM and monitor?
Based on my understanding of the needs, here’s an example cable (not a specific recommendation):
https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Basics-Uni...W3M1W?th=1
I recommend drawing a complete diagram that includes the KVM, Surface Pro, desktop, keyboard, mouse, and monitor. You can find many sample layouts online.
Make sure to list all ports, connectors, cable types, etc., so everything is clear before purchasing.
Pay close attention to the product specifications.

The video diagram shows connections for various ports and cables. I've summarized the key points accordingly.

The initial cable needs no extra power and functions in both directions. The subsequent cable behaves differently; a DP to HDMI connection is unidirectional, while a HDMI to DP switch would require an active mode.
