I've been using a computer since DOS, working well with Windows 10. Recently, I upgraded to a PC requiring Windows 11, and it seems files are now being saved to OneDrive. I've noticed that files I thought were in a folder can't be previewed anymore. This control of my files by OneDrive is really frustrating.

I no longer want to rely on OneDrive for everything. I prefer keeping all my files locally, not just saving them to OneDrive. I used to enjoy managing PCs and knowing where things were, but now I'm not as interested in that. My goal is to use a PC and store files on my own. I also have a NAS for additional storage.

But sometimes, when I save files—especially pictures—I see them appear on OneDrive instead of my desktop. Who knows what else is happening on my PC?

What's going on?

You can also search within OneDrive to retrieve your files.

I did, but my desktop and other places are connected to OneDrive. I've lost files now. This feels like a complete loss of control over my PC by OneDrive. They are pushing their paid services too much. Now I've lost important files and I'm really upset. At this point, I wonder if I can reinstall Windows with a clean setup that removes the link to OneDrive. 😡
But my product key for standalone MS Office was in a notepad file that's now missing. 😡
😡
Freakin' MS.

LibreOffice is free and supports reading and writing MS Office formats. When accessing files from OneDrive, you need to reinstall OneDrive and uninstall it again just for that reason.
