Question about AMD upgrade/crash/power utility/Starfield
This concept is really interesting! It involves an external reservoir separate from the case, perhaps on a 4' rack, which could work well if the case size limits proper airflow. The goal is to provide cooling power quickly when needed, balancing stability and performance. It’s similar to the contrast between propane and electric heating, but with minimal sudden temperature shifts—likely aided by radiator fins to manage rapid cooling without stressing the system.
Helper800 really appreciates the input and the link to higher-quality units! At the time of buying, I hadn't done enough research and was tight on money. I was assembling an entire rig from scratch, so I should have spread out my spending to afford better parts. I'm planning to upgrade the PSU soon. Eventually, I'll also consider upgrading the cooling, but right now a PSU upgrade seems more cost-effective.
Hello first, your Ryzen 5600 is struggling to keep up with the 7900xt, it’s a poor match. You should consider pairing it with a Ryzen 7 5700X or Am5 socket, ensuring it has at least a Ryzen 5 7500F or better. Your main concerns are also the overheating power supply and the existence of fake Gamemax power supplies. Make sure you get a reputable brand for your PSU—there are many low-quality options out there.
For your configuration, you don’t need more than 750 watts of PSU; with your Ryzen 5600 and 7900xt, you’re likely drawing around 350 watts, so an 850-watt unit would be excessive. Only upgrade to a better PSU if you plan to go with Intel 13900K or 14900K, which consume a lot of power.
Regarding the black screen issue, have you tried using different HDMI or DisplayPort cables? I also faced the same problem and found that adjusting settings in AMD Adrenalin Center helped. Look under the display section, find the overrides, set HDCP to disabled, restart your system, then try downloading a GPU cleaner, uninstalling the drivers, reinstalling them, and finally turning off HDCP. This should resolve the issue.
Lastly, could you tell me which games you’re playing? Are you using a monitor with a high refresh rate, such as 144Hz?
It’s not feasible to specify the exact wattage without knowing future upgrades. He might require a 1000-watt power supply if planning for higher power cards later. The recommended list reflects this need for more than 750 watts. Also, PSUs perform best at 30-70% load, which supports the idea of using an 850-watt unit. His maximum system draw is closer to 450-500 watts rather than 350 watts. A 5600x works well with a 7900 xt, except in rare cases where very specific games at 1080p cause issues—typically only at 100+ fps, which is still playable.
Hi Corduroy,
Thank you very much for your feedback! Everyone here has contributed significantly, along with my own efforts and testing.
I acknowledge I've come across some sources suggesting a performance issue when pairing the Ryzen 5600x with the Powercolor Radeon 7900 XT Hellhound. I also realize my prior research wasn't as comprehensive before deciding to upgrade from the Ryzen 1600.
I selected the 5600x based on three Starfield game reviews from different sites: a 3600 was recommended, a 5600 would suffice, and anything above that seemed unnecessary for casual gamers like myself.
I had thought about a higher-end CPU like the 5900, which CountMike mentioned earlier, but I still felt it wasn’t essential.
At that time, I didn’t realize games are now much more demanding on CPUs than GPUs, though a powerful GPU is still recommended.
Additionally, I didn’t want to replace my B450 Gamer Pro Carbon mainboard, which only supports the AM4 socket. I might consider upgrading later, but for now I’m content with it.
I’ll address the PSU suggestions in the other thread with Helper800’s response.
Thank you for your assistance, Helper800.
I truly value your guidance on meeting the Corduroy requirements.
Before posting this thread, I was lacking sufficient research on PSUs, which is why I reached out to you.
It was due to the numerous obstacles I encountered during my own investigation.
I’m confident upgrading my PSU was the correct decision—I purchased a Corsair RM850X using your list and plan to install it this weekend.
Upgrading again seems possible in the future, but not soon enough.
I performed some calculations and found that the 300-watt Corduroy model is sufficient for my needs.
Additionally, I’ve added more fans to improve cooling; two EASYDIY FAB fans from a three-piece kit placed directly under my GPU have already helped lower temperatures.
I’ll update this thread later with performance results after installing and testing the new PSU.
The op has a Ryzen 5600 non-X, just a bit slower. I only suggested a 750 PSU because it’s a budget option; an 850 or higher would be better for future upgrades. I understand you’re right that 850 watts or more would be ideal, but the current usage is around 350 to 400 watts. The CPU is still the main bottleneck, though not drastically so. Check online reviews for a 5600 with a 7900X and see what resolution it supports.
For 1080p, the op never mentioned the actual resolution it runs at, so with your setup he should be handling 1440p.
Thanks for sharing what you already knew: lower resolutions put more strain on the CPU, and some games are more CPU or GPU demanding.
In short, a well-branded PSU of 750W or higher is recommended, paired with a 16GB RAM kit—dual channel is best if possible, or 32GB if budget allows.
Your motherboard’s debug LEDs aren’t showing up, so no one has helped much since everyone was talking about trivial issues. It looks like the warranty might have expired, and you haven’t given enough details about your troubleshooting steps.
I sent Helper800, if you wish to view my comments I can forward them, now let's see if your system is responding better. Do you still experience issues with no EZ debud LED lights on the motherboard? And has the dual channel 16gb kit been installed? Regarding that high-performance power supply, you should replace it at the earliest due to two reasons—are you currently using it? What monitor are you using? Are your games displayed in 1080p, 1440p, or 4K resolution?
