The question about the Intel brand is unclear. I believe the CPU isn't sold with a cooler. Generally, the coolers provided with other Intel CPUs aren't the high-performance models you'd expect for that kind of processor. You might be able to find one and install it on the Core Ultra 9 285K, but it probably won't meet your needs. It's easier to get a non-Intel cooler, which could use air or liquid cooling, depending on your preference. Most would suggest using liquid if you're concerned about overheating.
I have an Intel® Core™ Ultra 9 285K and I'm using this cooler: https://noctua.at/en/nh-d15-g2. After running the AIDA64 Extreme System Stability Test, there was NO thermal throttling.
Nope. It's too small to handle all possible situations. This Intel cooler is only designed for CPUs up to 65W.
As per this review, the base TDP of the 285K is 125W (PL1) increasing to 250W Turbo boost (PL2).
That means the 285K might struggle to manage double the power of that Intel cooler at PL1 (125W), or even four times the power rating of the Laminar RH1 if you attempted PL2.
In reality, the 285K would likely not hit 125W, let alone 250W with the Intel cooler. It simply isn't powerful enough. The system would probably start up, but once serious tasks began, the CPU temperature would rise to 100°C and cause throttling.
If I were using this setup, I’d consider switching to the Thermalright Phantom Spirit with seven heatpipes (more than the Peerless Assassin’s six) for $35.90 in the USA.
I’ve also experimented with the Peerless Assassin 120 SE and the more costly Noctua NH-D15 in different configurations.
For those with compact cases that lack space, a pricier AIO water cooler might be a better choice. I’d likely opt for something with two or three radiator fans—240, 360, or 420mm.
There’s a reason Intel and AMD don’t include heatsinks with their high-performance chips. Even if they did, most users wouldn’t install the built-in cooler, but would prefer a better alternative from another brand. Buying a cooler just for packaging doesn’t make sense; it’s often not provided at all.
