Maybe? I wouldn't worry about it though. The card is dead anyway, if it can't install drivers, there's not really a way to bring that back. If it damages it more, it's already dead, what's the harm in that? The only things that could be damaged further are the GPU core or memory chips, none of which are useful for people using the card for parts.

I'm unsure if you grasped it correctly—the GPU I have now is the partially damaged GTX 770, not the original 9800. Are you wondering if using it more could cause further harm?

I forgot to mention the GTX 770. Sorry about that. Using the damaged card won’t help; it might actually get worse.

Yes, it suggests that without proper drivers, deep cleaning likely won’t resolve the issue.

I mean, anything is possible, but no, the odds of a deep cleaning fixing it are incredibly low. I'd consider the card a write off at this point.

Really, before you told me it could be fixed, I wasn’t sure about changing my mind so quickly.

I thought it was improbable to resolve the issue. Plus, without installation and potential artifacting, the core is probably non-functional. A metal flake wouldn’t be considered a solution. I’m not saying avoid it entirely, as cleaning a GPU isn’t that complicated, but don’t expect any results. I’d be surprised if it actually worked.

Sure, I can do that. Let's get straight to it.

I'm trying to figure out if I need to replace the thermal paste when cleaning the GPU or if I can just use the old one. I also noticed some people adding substances around the edges of the chip, but it's unclear where to find those products. Lastly, I want to know if thermal paste is similar to the one used for CPUs.

Depends on how long the paste has been there, but if it's been over a month or two I’d swap it out. It’s the same kind of stuff used for CPUs—just ensure you use a non-conductive formula (most are, though a few low-end and high-end options exist). When applying, make sure the whole die is covered, opting for a bit more paste than less. What did folks do on the edge of a GPU? I’ve re-applied thermal paste to many GPUs, but I’ve only ever used it there.
